Collected letters expounding on the severity of cremation compiled by R. Meir Lerner.
R. Meir Lerner (1857-1930), served in various important rabbinical positions, including as Rav of the Federation of Synagogues in London and as the Chief Rabbi of Altona.
He was a vigorous opponent of the Reform movement, particularly in regard to their practice to permit cremation in place of traditional full burial. Consequently, R. Meir refused to permit the burial of such ashes in a Jewish cemetery. In order to support his position, he gathered responsa from approximately 200 Rabbonim from all over the world, running the gamut from Lithuanian authorities such as R. Yechiel Michel Epstein (Oruch HaShulchan), to Chassidic Rebbes such as R. Chaim Elazar Shapiro of Munkacs (Minchas Elozor), German Rabbinical scholars such as R. Asher Marx of Darmstadt and leading Rabbinical figures from Eretz Yisroel including the Aderes and the Sdei Chemed.

ר ‘מאיר לרנר (תרי”ז- תר”צ, 1857-1930),רב דק”ק חברת בני ישראל בלונדון ואח”כ הרב הראשי של אלטונה, היה מתנגד נמרץ לתנועה הרפורמית, בייחוד לכל הנוגע למנהגם להתיר שריפת גופות במקום הקבורה המסורתית המלאה. כתוצאה מכך, ר’ מאיר סירב להתיר קבורת אפר כזה בבית קברות יהודי. כדי לתמוך בעמדתו זו, הוא אסף תשובות מכמאתיים רבנים מכל רחבי העולם, החל מגדולי רבני ליטא, כגון ר’ יחיאל מיכל אפשטיין (ערוך השולחן), עובר דרך אדמו”רים חסידיים כמו ר’ חיים אלעזר שפירא ממונקאטש(מנחת אלעזר), רבנים תלמידי חכמים מגרמניה כגון ר’ אשר מרקס מדארמשטאט ורבנים דגולים מארץ ישראל, כולל האדר”ת והשדי חמד.
