Fundamental Sefer of Mussar by R. Shmuel Abuhav. Printed anonymously, with the author, location and year of print not stated.
During the early 17th century in Italy, many laymen were becoming lax in various important Halachic prohibitions, specifically Yayin Nesech. This sefer, divided into 10 parts, addresses these issues and provides an important historical glimpse of the spiritual standing of the community and the challenges it faced.
The author chose to publish this sefer anonymously, therefore printing the sefer in Prague, despite the variety of quality printing options available in Italy.
The CHIDA in Shem HaGedolim writes that although the sefer does not mention its author, “we know it was written by the righteous R. Shmuel Abuhav, a distinguished Rav of Venice”. Additionally the sefer is quoted by the Mogen Avrohom (Orach Chaim Siman 340).
R. Shmuel Abuhav (1610-1694), was among the great Torah giants and poskim of his generation. He served as Rov of Verona and Venice and authored the famed D’var Shmuel responsa. He was amongst the fiercest opponents of Shabtai Tzvi, and invested tremendous efforts to curb the “Sabbatean” influence in Italy.

ספר מוסר יסודי מאת ר’ שמואל אבוהב. נדפס בעילום שם ללא ציון שם המחבר, מקום ושנת ההוצאה. בתחילת המאה ה-17 באיטליה, חל רפיון אצל פשוטי העם בשמירת איסורים הלכתיים חשובים. ספר זה מחולק לעשרה חלקים ועוסק בבעיות אלה. הוא מספק הצצה היסטורית חשובה אל איתנות רוחנית והאתגרים העומדים בפני הקהילה.
המחבר בחר לפרסם את ספרו בעילום שם, ולכן הדפיס אותו בפראג, למרות המגוון הרחב והזמין של אפשרויות הדפסה איכותיות באיטליה.
החיד”א בשם הגדולים כותב שאמנם שם המחבר אינו כתוב בספר, אולם אנו יודעים שהוא נכתב ע”י הצדיק ר’ שמואל אבוהב, רב מפורסם בוונציאה” ראה מגן אברהם או”ח סימן ש”מ.
ר’ שמואל אבוהב (ש”ע- תנ”ד, 1610-1694), היה מגדולי תלמידי החכמים והפוסקים בדורו. שימש כרב בוורונא וויניציא, ובעל ספר השו”ת דבר שמואל. היה מהמתנגדים הגדולים ביותר של שבתי צבי, והשקיע מאמצים עצומים בעצירת ההשפעה השבתאית באיטליה.
