Divrei Chaim parts 1 and 2, with novella on the laws of Gittin and Mikva’os, by R. Chaim Halberstam, the famed Divrei Chaim of Sanz. Published anonymously.
On the title page it says “Composed by one of the students…with commentary on the Poskim”. He notes in the introduction that “I have not listed my name for the accepted reason”. This is the first published sefer by the Divrei Chaim, with his responsa being published 11 years later, in 1875.
R. Chaim Halberstam of Sanz “Divrei Chaim” (1797-1876), was the founder of the Sanz Chassidic dynasty. He was the son-in-law of R. Baruch Frankel-Thumim the “Boruch Ta’am” and was a talmid of R. Naftali Tzvi of Ropchitz and R. Tzvi Hirsch of Zidichov. He was renowned not only as one of the great Chassidic masters of his time, but also as a noted Halachic authority. His court attracted thousands of followers, among them many of the generation’s Rebbes and Talmidei Chachomim and he was one the most influential Rabbonim of his era. His descendants followed in his footsteps, combining Chassidic leadership with Halachic erudition, serving both as Chassidic Rebbes and as Rabbonim in Galicia, Poland, Hungary and Romania. The Sanz dynasty is continued today through the Chassidic courts of Bobov, Klausenberg, Stropkov, Zhmigrod, Gorlitz, and others.

בעמוד השער נכתב: “שחיבר אחד התלמידים…”. הוא כותב בהקדמה כי “לא כתבתי את שמי מטעם הידועה “. ספר זה הינו הראשון מספרי הדברי חיים שיצא לאור. ספרי השו”ת יצא בתרל”ה (1875)- כעבור 11 שנים.
ר’ חיים הלברשטאם מצאנז- ה”דברי חיים” (תקנ”ז- תרל”ו 1797-1876), היה מייסד שושלת חסידות צאנז. חתן ר’ ברוך פרנקל- תאומים “ברוך טעם” ותלמיד ר’ נפתלי צבי מרופשיץ ור’ צבי הירש מז’ידיטשוב. שמו יצא כאחד מגדולי האדמו”רים בתקופתו ובנוסף נודע גם כפוסק הלכתי דגול. נהרו אליו אלפי חסידים, ביניהם תלמידי חכמים ורבנים. צאצאיו המשיכו בדרכו, ושילבו את האדמו”רות עם גדלות בתורה. הם שימשו מחד כאדמו”רים, ומאידך כרבנים בגליציה, פולין, הונגריה ורומניה. כיום נמשכת שושלת צאנז כחסידות באבוב, קלויזנבורג, סטרופקוב, זמיגרוד, גורליץ ועוד.
