Fundamental sefer of Mussar authored by R. Refoel Katz of Hamburg, known as R. Refoel Hamburger. Part of the sefer discusses the severity of “Loshon HaRah” (derogatory speech) and was one of the first seforim to extensively deal with this topic. As such it is broadly quoted by the Chofetz Chaim.
R. Refoel HaCohen Hamburger (1722-1803), was a close talmid of the Shaagas Aryeh and a Rebbe of
R. Chaim of Volozhin. He served as Rav in Minsk, Posen and the famous combined communities of Altona, Hamburg and Wandsbeck (AH’U). It is said that when the Vilna Gaon was in exile he stayed in the home of R. Refoel.

ספר מוסר יסודי מאת ר’ רפאל מהמבורג, המכונה ר’ רפאל המבורגר. חלק מהספר דן בחומרת עוון לשון הרע. ספר זה הינו מהראשונים שנגעו בנושא זה בהרחבה, ועל כן החפץ חיים מצטט ממנו רבות.
ר’ רפאל הכהן המבורגר (תפ”ב- תקס”ג, 1722-1803), היה תלמיד מקורב לשאגת אריה ורבו של ר’ חיים מוואלאז’ין. כיהן כרב במינסק, פוזנא ובאיחוד קהילות אה”ו הנודעות (אלטונה, המבורג וונדסבק). מסופר, כי בעת שיצא הגאון מוילנא לגלות, שהה בביתו של ר’ רפאל.
