R. Shmuel Straschun (1793-1872) was born near Vilna and studied under his father R. Yosef, gaining renown as a tremendous Talmid Chochom. After his marriage he settled in his wife’s hometown of Straschun. He eventually relocated to Vilna where he established a distillery and became one of the most prominent members of the community. While his wife conducted the business, he devoted his time to studying and teaching the Talmud. His glosses on Shas have been incorporated into every recent edition of the Talmud under the title Hago’hos Ha’RaShaSH.

ר’ שמואל שטראשון (תקנ”ג-תרל”ב 1793-1872) נולד סמוך לווילנא ולמד אצל אביו ר’ יוסף. שמו יצא לפניו כתלמיד חכם מופלג. לאחר נישואיו הוא התיישב בשטראשון, עיירת מולדתה של אשתו. עם הזמן הוא עבר לווילנא, שם הקים מזקקה למשקאות והיה לאחד מחשובי הקהילה. רעייתו ניהלה את העסק, בעוד שהוא הקדיש את עתותיו ללימוד והרבצת תורה. הערותיו על הש”ס שולבו בכל המהדורות האחרונות של הש”ס תחת הכותרת “הגהות הרש”ש”.
