The Jewish community in Brisk dated back to as early as 1388, when it was the first community to be issued a permit to create a Jewish communal infrastructure (by Prince Witold of Lithuania). Renowned for its influential rabbinical leaders and scholars, it was one of the most prominent communities in Eastern Europe until the Holocaust.

הקהילה היהודית בבריסק, שנוסדה בשנת קמ”ח (1338), הייתה הקהילה הראשונה שזכתה לאישורו של הנסיך ויטולד מליטא לייסד תשתית קהילתית יהודית. נודעה בשערים בזכות מנהיגיה הרבניים רבי ההשפעה ותלמידי החכמים שחיו בה. עד השואה הייתה בריסק אחת הקהילות החשובות ביותר במזרח אירופה.
