Gutmacher, R. Eliyahu (Elya)/Vilna Gaon.
Autograph letter written to R. Tzvi Hersh Lehren of Amsterdam. Dated 1850, requesting a picture of the Vilna Gaon. This is highly unusual, as many of the torah giants of that era were unfavorably disposed towards having portraits, particularly of people deceased. With additional financial details concerning the Yishuv in Yerushalayim. Concludes with poetic expressions of his great yearning to meet R. Lehren personally.
R. Eliyahu Gutmacher also known as R. Elya Greiditzer (1796-1875) was one of the foremost disciples of R. Akiva Eiger. In addition to being greatly respected as great Talmid Chochom and Rav, he was renowned as a miracle worker to whom many turned in time of need. He also was extremely active in raising funds for the impoverished Jews of the Old Yishuv and was one of the early proponents of Yishuv Eretz Yisroel.

מכתב אוטוגרפי שנכתב לר’ צבי הירש לארהן מאמסטרדם. המכתב, המתוארך לשנת תר”י (1850), מבקש תמונה של הגאון מווילנא. בקשה זו חריגה ביותר, שכן רבים מענקי הרוח של אותה תקופה התנגדו לתמונות ובפרט של אנשים שנפטרו. כולל פרטים כלכליים נוספים הנוגעים ליישוב בירושלים. מסתיים בביטויים פיוטיים אודות השתוקקותו הגדולה לפגוש את הרב להרן באופן אישי
הרב אליהו גוטמר, המוכר גם כר’ אליה גריידיצר (תקנ”ו-תרל”ה 1796-1875) היה מבכירי תלמידיו של ר’ עקיבא אייגר. בנוסף להיותו תלמיד חכם ורב דגול, הוא הוערך כפועל ישועות שאליו פנו רבים בעת צרה. כמו כן, הוא היה פעיל ביותר בגיוס כפים למען היהודים העניים של היישוב הישן, והיה אחד התומכים הראשונים ביישוב ארץ ישראל
