Transcript of an open letter released in the summer of 1796. Wilensky in his work Chasidim u-Misnagedim (1970) suggests the following background to this letter. Apparently a young man audaciously posed as a son of the Gaon and travelled through various communities, informing rabbinic leaders that his father had retracted his previous condemnation of the Chassidic movement. This prompted the Gaon to release a statement in which he reaffirms his views. In the letter, mention is made of two disciples of the Gaon, R. Chaim and R. Sadyia who had undertaken to travel to the districts of Lita and Reisen to circulate the condemnation. Although this particular transcript mentions R. Chaim of Volozhin, Wilensky doubts the accuracy of this and suggests it is more likely to be R. Chaim of Tcherhei.

מכתב גינוי בכתב יד נגד תנועת החסידות
תעתיק של המכתב הגלוי החתום על ידי הגאון מווילנא והבית דין של ווילנא לגבי המקורות, כביכול, של תנועת החסידות
תעתיק של מכתב גלוי שנכתב בקיץ של שנת תקנ”ו (1796). וילנסקי, ביצירתו “חסידים ומתנגדים” (תש”ל-1970) מציע את הרקע הבא למכתב זה. נראה שאיש צעיר התחזה ברוב חוצפתו לבן הגאון, נסע לקהילות שונות והודיע למנהיגים הרבניים שאביו חזר בו מגינויו באשר לתנועת החסידות. בעקבות מאורע זה, החליט הגאון להוציא הצהרה שבה הוא מאשר את דעותיו. במכתבו מוזכרים שניים מתלמידי הגאון – ר’ חיים ור’ סעדיה – שקיבלו על עצמם לנסוע למחוזות ליטא ורייסן כדי להפיץ את הגינוי. על אף שתעתיק מסוים זה מזכיר את ר’ חיים מוולוז’ין, וילנסקי מפקפק בדיוק הדברים ומשער שמדובר בר’ חיים מטשרכיי
